Cleaning Units Explained: PSI, GPM & Nozzle Size

Pressure washer specifications can be confusing when you are comparing PSI, GPM, nozzle size, heat and chemical capability. Each number describes a different part of the cleaning process, and no single specification tells the complete story.

This guide explains how pressure, water flow and nozzle size work together—and why the highest PSI is not always the fastest or most effective choice.

Quick definition: Cleaning Units are calculated by multiplying PSI by GPM.

Cleaning Units = PSI × GPM

For example, a pressure washer producing 4,000 PSI at 4 GPM delivers 16,000 Cleaning Units.

What Are Pressure Washer Cleaning Units?

Cleaning Units provide a simple way to compare the combined pressure and water flow of two pressure washers. PSI represents force, while GPM represents water volume. Multiplying the two produces a basic comparison of total output.

The numbers above are similar, but the machines may perform very differently. Machine A provides more pressure for stubborn buildup. Machine C provides more rinsing volume and may cover large areas faster.

Cleaning Units are therefore useful for initial comparison, but they are not a complete buying formula. Surface type, soil, nozzle selection, water temperature, chemical application and expected duty cycle still matter.

What Does PSI Mean?

PSI stands for pounds per square inch. It measures the pressure of the water leaving the nozzle and represents the force available to loosen dirt, coatings and buildup.

Higher pressure can help with difficult deposits, but more PSI is not always better. Excessive pressure or an overly concentrated spray pattern can damage wood, paint, siding, vehicle finishes, roofing materials and other sensitive surfaces.

The pressure reaching the surface is also affected by:

  • Nozzle orifice size
  • Spray angle
  • Distance from the cleaning surface
  • Hose length and system restrictions
  • Pump output and equipment condition

Important: Never select a nozzle or cleaning technique based only on maximum machine PSI. Use the pressure appropriate for the surface and follow the equipment manufacturer’s operating instructions.

What Does GPM Mean?

GPM stands for gallons per minute. It measures water flow—the amount of water the pressure washer delivers each minute.

GPM has a major effect on production speed because water carries loosened dirt and debris away. On large flatwork, fleet washing and other high-volume jobs, increasing water flow can often improve cleaning speed more than simply increasing pressure.

More flow can help:

  • Rinse debris away faster
  • Cover larger areas efficiently
  • Feed appropriately sized surface cleaners
  • Reduce repeated passes
  • Improve production on commercial jobs

Before choosing a high-flow machine, confirm that the jobsite water supply can provide enough water. A pressure washer cannot consistently deliver its rated flow if the incoming supply is inadequate.

How Nozzle Size Affects PSI and GPM

The nozzle creates the restriction that allows the pressure washer to build pressure. The correct nozzle orifice must match the machine’s rated PSI and GPM.

A nozzle that is too small may cause excessive pressure, engine or motor strain, pump bypassing and premature wear. A nozzle that is too large will reduce operating pressure and may leave the machine underperforming.

Understanding Pressure Washer Nozzle Codes

Most pressure washer nozzle tips use a four- or five-digit code. The first two digits identify the spray angle. The remaining digits indicate the nozzle’s orifice size.

For example:

  • 1504 generally indicates a 15-degree spray angle with a size 4.0 orifice.
  • 25045 generally indicates a 25-degree spray angle with a size 4.5 orifice.

Always confirm the exact manufacturer labeling and match the orifice to the pressure washer’s rated flow and pressure.

Spray-angle descriptions are general guidance. The safe and effective choice depends on the surface, distance, machine output and operator technique.

How Heat Changes Cleaning Performance

Hot water is especially useful when cleaning oil, grease, fats and other oily soils. Heat helps loosen these substances and can reduce the detergent, labor and time needed for difficult degreasing work.

Cold water remains appropriate for most dirt, mud, mildew, siding, concrete and general exterior cleaning. The value of hot water depends on the type of soil being removed—not simply the desire for a more powerful machine.

How Chemicals Affect Cleaning

Detergents and cleaning chemicals can improve results by loosening soil before mechanical cleaning begins. The correct product depends on both the contaminant and the surface.

Effective chemical cleaning depends on:

  • Choosing a product compatible with the surface
  • Using the correct dilution
  • Applying it through compatible equipment
  • Allowing the appropriate dwell time
  • Preventing the solution from drying when prohibited by the product instructions
  • Following labeling, containment and disposal requirements

Chemical safety: Never mix products unless their labels and manufacturers specifically permit it. Follow the product label, use appropriate personal protective equipment and comply with local environmental requirements.

  • Pump type and drive configuration
  • Jobsite water and electrical supply
  • Available accessories, nozzles and replacement parts
  • Serviceability and manufacturer support
