How to Choose Pressure Washer Plumbing Parts
Pressure washer plumbing covers the connectors, fittings, valves, strainers, gauges, and adapters that link your pump, hose, gun, wand, and accessories. Correctly matching thread standards, sizes, and sealing methods prevents leaks, pressure loss, and premature wear.
Identify Your Connection Type
NPT (Tapered, North America)
Common on commercial machines and accessories. Threads are tapered and typically seal with thread sealant or PTFE tape. Do not mix with BSP.
BSPP/BSPT (International)
BSPT is tapered; BSPP is parallel and seals with a washer or O‑ring. BSP threads use a different angle from NPT and are not interchangeable.
Metric M22 (Consumer/Prosumer)
Widely used on pumps, hoses, and guns. Confirm the inner seat size: M22‑14 vs M22‑15. Mixing 14 mm and 15 mm seats will leak.
Quick‑Connect (QC)
Fast tool‑free couplers. 1/4″ QC is common at tips/wands; 3/8″ QC is common between hose, gun, and pump. Verify O‑rings are in good condition.
When you are unsure of a thread, measure the outside diameter, check pitch with a gauge, and identify whether the port is tapered (threads narrow) or parallel (straight). A photo of the sealing surface helps, too.
Materials, Sealing, and Service Notes
Material Selection
Brass fittings are widely used and serviceable; stainless steel offers improved corrosion and wear resistance. Match materials to your water quality, detergents, and duty cycle.
Sealants and O‑Rings
Use thread sealant/PTFE tape on tapered threads as specified. M22, BSPP, and QC joints rely on O‑rings or washers—keep spares on hand.
Valves and Protection
Ball valves allow quick shutoff and tool changes. Check valves enforce flow direction. Thermal relief valves help protect pumps during extended bypass periods.
Layout Considerations
Use an inlet strainer before the pump, provide a clear bypass return path, and mount gauges where you can read and service them safely.
Do not apply thread tape to quick‑connect, M22, or other joints that seal on an O‑ring/washer. Over‑taping parallel or O‑ring seats can prevent proper sealing and may crack components.
