Pumps & Plumbing FAQ's
Built‑in vs. external unloader: which should I choose?
Built‑in unloaders simplify installation on compact units. External unloaders with bypass to tank make heat management and service easier on professional rigs.
Can I run hot water through a cold‑water pump?
Only if the pump is specifically rated for the higher inlet temperature and equipped with the correct seals. Check the data plate and seal kit specifications.
What causes pump cavitation and how do I prevent it?
Cavitation comes from inadequate inlet water or restriction. Use a larger‑ID inlet hose, keep runs short and straight, clean the inlet filter, and avoid air leaks on fittings.
Do I need a thermal relief valve?
Yes. In bypass, water heats quickly and can damage seals. A thermal relief valve purges hot water to protect the pump, especially on units that idle frequently.
Can I increase PSI by swapping the pump?
Only if every component—engine/motor power, hoses, gun, unloader, and fittings—is rated for the higher pressure. Otherwise, stay with your current PSI and size the nozzle appropriately.
Triplex vs. axial: what’s the difference?
Triplex plunger pumps are rebuildable and built for frequent use with steadier pressure. Axial pumps are compact and cost‑effective but usually offer fewer service options and a shorter service life.
How do I match a replacement pump to my engine or motor?
Confirm pump RPM and drive style, then match shaft type/size and bolt pattern. Keep GPM/PSI close to the original unless the power source and accessories are rated for more. Verify rotation and unloader style before ordering.
